The Arco Gas Station in Mentone is once again fully stocked with snow chains for the winter. Most of you probably have no idea where Mentone is. It is next to Redlands and is the entry point to the back road to Big Bear and it is a perfect place to get your tire chains.

Mentone Arco
1759 Mentone Blvd
Mentone, CA
909-794-6068

To get there, you need to get on Lugonia and go east. Lugonia eventually changes its name to Mentone Blvd. Then it becomes HWY 38 which takes you to Big Bear. This gas station is one of the last stops prior to the low elevation chain up point on days when the snow fall is low. When the snow fall is medium, it is still one of the final stops.

This time the store is stocked with much more that just the PL Series chains and the RUD Grip 4×4. They have these in stock for certain. But I have added a whole bunch of discount rack chains that we have had for 2-3 years that are not the RUD Brand. About 2 years ago, I went exclusive with RUD. This is leftover inventory. Included are as follows:

RUD PL Series 1118, 1122, 1126, 1130, 1134, 1138, 1142
RUD Grip 4×4 0141, 0142, 0143, 0157, 0160, 2532, 2533
SCC Shur Grip SZ329 / SZ335 / SZ339
Pewag Brenta C XMR80V
Leclede Alpine Sport 2317
Peerless AutoTrac 0231810
Pewag Slimtec TT573
Pewag 2216
Pewag 3229
Glacier Vtrac 1934 / 1946 / 2127

If you need chains today and you are near the Redland / Running Springs areas, please stop in hear to find good quality chains at reasonable prices.

On Thanksgiving weekend, I did my annual Thanksgiving trek up Highway 395. Once again, I have stocked three stores along the Eastern Sierra. The quantities in the different stores vary.

This is what got stocked.

Mobile Station Olancha
601 S Highway 395, Olancha, CA
(760) 764-2289

This station is stocked with the smallest quantities as it is the furthest away from the chain requirements. They got the PL Series chains for passenger vehicles and a small handful of Grip 4×4 sizes 0141, 0142, 0157, and 0160.

Mobile Station Lone Pine
380 N. Main, Highway 395
Lone Pine, CA 93545
(760) 264-9687

They got the PL Series chains for passenger vehicles and the Grip 4×4 sizes 0141, 0142, 0143, 0157, 0160, and 2532.

Chevron Station
356 N. Main Street
Big Pine, CA, 93513
(760) 938-2626

The Chevron station also has the PL Series chains and the Grip 4×4. They currently have all models of the Grip 4×4 including the 0141, 0142, 0143, 0157, 0160, 2532, and 2533. Furthermore, they have the largest quantities of the 2532 – the most commonly sold model number of the Grip 4×4.

All three stores are charging the same price.

$49.99 for the PL Series Chains.
$120.00 for the Grip 4×4.

Just one other note. There are other gas stations stocking certain other brands. While I don’t like to be critical of what others are offering, what I saw was not pleasant. Light Truck cable chains (cobra cables) for $100. SuperZLT Z patterned cables for $150 (double the cost you find on Amazon). Selections were very unorganized and if you found what you needed, you were rather lucky.

Have fun on your trip to Mammoth or Lake Tahoe.

Prior to shipping out the replacement chains, I did another trip to Firestone and tried the chains he had returned on the same tire size of a different manufacturer. The chains fit perfectly. The chains at Firestone where even Mountain Snow M+S tires. As a result, I am leaving the catalog unchanged.

Just goes to show, sometimes their are variances between different tire manufacturers.

1. We wish to acknowledge the suffering of the people hit by hurricane Sandy. If you were directly affected by this incident, then request a 20% discount on your purchase in the notes and we will grant it.

2. We hope that everyone will participate in the democratic process of the elections, study the issues, and vote your conscience.

Chain sales are going along well during this early part of the season. Many people are preparing for the winter and good for you.

Please ask us your specific questions about tire chains in this blog post. We find this to be a very effective means of communication leaving a trail of answers for all to see.

Best wishes.

The RUD Super Greifsteg tire chains are aggressive chains that are built to last. If you have a job for a piece of equipment to dig you out of deep snow, or need snow removal from a road or parking lot, these chains are for you. Super Greifstegs are a long-life tire chain; manufactured from high-quality alloy steel and are reversible for extended usage.

The strength and durability of the Super Griefsteg tire chains has resulted in a reputation in several industries which commonly make use of this high grade chain.

1. Snow plow removal equipment used by the Department of Transportation in many states
2. Heavy commercial equipment
3. Emergency medical service vehicles including ambulances and paramedics
4. Dump Trucks
5. Back Hoes
6. Unimogs
7. Heavy duty military equipment

The Super Greifsteg tire chains pay for themselves quickly as they have many advantages over many other tire chains. The Super Greifsteg’s well-constructed mesh design and wear bars provide extra traction and wear area. Also, they are reversible for extended life. These high-quality tire chains are not only distinguished by their high resistance to wear but also by the innovative design which allows for maximum traction, smooth running performance and exceptional tire protection.

Not Made In China
These chains are German engineered and made in Europe. Currently, these chains are assembled in Romania.

We often hear stories from customers praising the abilities of these chains. Here is an example of an email we received from an end user.

Dear Katie,

A few weeks ago I ordered a set of pattern chains (Super Greifstegs) for my husband’s backhoe. He has always thought that there is no chain better than a Pewag. His mind has definitely been changed! Here are a couple of pictures from our last snow storm that included 40 MPH winds.

Thank you for all of your help.

Please continue asking us your pre-sales questions regarding snow chains here. The Ask Us portal has been working out very well for us and our customers.

For snow chain sales, it was a mostly mild January with a few bursts of sales due to some scattered snow storms nationwide, mostly in the north and north eastern areas. In all, I think snow chain sales were about 1/3 of what we are use to seeing in January. We will be watching the weather reports for February to see if the winter we are use to seeing at this time of the year returns.

In the meantime, we still have great deals available. The price for the PL Series chains were reduced last month to $21 – a bargain found no where else. Price reductions were also made on the Easy 2 Go models and the available Centrax models. Sales on the Grip 4×4 and the Olympia Sprints have also continued to go forward as we always have good pricing on these popular chains.

Be safe during the month of February.

285/65R20 is either Olympia Sprints 140 or Olympia Sprints 141. The proper model number is yet to be determined and will not be determined till next year due to our being out of stock of the Olympia Sprints 140. The Olympia Sprints 136 can work with much extra needed effort – it is a very tight fit.
